From “new” to essential: what our latest Rider Report tells us

Beryl Rider Report 2025 reveals record modal shift and growing role in everyday travel.

Beryl has published its Rider Report 2025, revealing the strongest evidence yet of the positive impact shared micromobility can have on everyday travel habits across the UK.

This year’s report brings together 11,375 responses from riders and non-riders across 17 different scheme areas.

The findings show that Beryl continues to play a significant role in reducing reliance on private vehicles. 62% of riders reported replacing a journey that would otherwise have been taken by car, van or taxi with a Beryl trip, representing a 6% increase on 2024.

Reinforcing this shift, 38% of riders have reduced their private car use, with 34% driving less often and 4% stopping entirely for the journeys now taken with Beryl. Taxi and ride-share use has also fallen sharply, with a 48% overall reduction among riders.

Beryl is also helping more people cycle more often. 64% of riders now use Beryl more frequently than they did a year ago, and for 41% of users it has become their first choice of transport for their most common journeys.

Use of Beryl vehicles is increasingly driven by everyday necessity rather than leisure. Work commuting is now the single most common use case, accounting for 29% of trips, with personal errands and student commuting also showing year-on-year growth.

Electric vehicles continue to dominate rider preference. Three quarters of riders (76%) have used an e-bike in the last six months, and when given a free choice of vehicle, 55% say the e-bike is their preferred option. This marks a further increase on last year and reinforces the role of electric assistance in making cycling accessible for a wider range of journeys and abilities.

The report also highlights the continued impact of the cost-of-living crisis on transport choices. 30% of riders and non-riders cited cost-effectiveness as a reason for signing up to Beryl, making it one of the top motivations for using the service and reinforcing its value compared to the ongoing costs associated with private vehicles.

"This year’s report shows that shared micromobility is becoming a normal part of how people travel. More riders are choosing Beryl as their first choice for regular journeys. That kind of behaviour change is exactly where shared transport can make the biggest difference."
