Leeds riders have completed more than 28,000 journeys on LNER e-scooters, accounting for around 8% of all journeys within the city, despite only launching in March.
As the scheme continues to grow, riders will soon notice a small but important change: following approval from the Department for Transport (DfT), the maximum speed of the e-scooters in Leeds will increase from 12.5mph to 15.5mph, bringing them into line with the e-bikes.
Supporting safer shared riding
Aligning both vehicle types helps to create smoother consistency across the shared transport network, allowing e-scooters and e-bikes to travel at the same speed when using cycle lanes and other cycling infrastructure.
The updated speed follows approval from the Department for Transport and reflects feedback from riders, many of whom highlighted speed consistency during Beryl's annual user survey.
The positive impact so far
Since launch, Leeds residents and visitors have embraced both Leeds' LNER Beryl e-scooters and e-bikes. To date the scheme has delivered over:
- 343,000 journeys
- 792,000 kilometres travelled
- 86,000 hours of riding
- 28,000 e-scooter journeys since March
With the average trip in Leeds being 2.35 kilometres taking around 15 minutes. These figures demonstrate how shared bikes and e-scooters are helping people choose active, low-carbon travel for short everyday journeys, supporting Leeds' ambitions for a greener, more connected city.
Safety remains the priority
The increase has been approved by the Department for Transport and riders are reminded to continue using cycle lanes where available, follow the Highway Code and ride responsibly.
While the speed limit is changing, Beryl's approach to safety remains exactly the same. Our aim is to deliver a transport network where bikes and e-scooters work together, making shared spaces safer, more predictable and easier to use for everyone.
