E-scooters join Beryl BTN Bikes for the first time in Brighton

Brighton & Hove is embracing a new era of shared transport as Beryl e-scooters roll out for the first time.

The arrival of e-scooters complements Brighton's existing Beryl BTN Bike network, which has already supported more than 1.2 million journeys and over 3.4 million kilometres of travel, helping thousands of people choose active, low-carbon transport for everyday journeys.


From coasting along the seafront, taking in the views of the West Pier and zipping up to Brighton train station, the new e-scooters offer another quick and easy way to get around for both residents and visitors.

 

Getting started

 

There are a few important differences between e-scooters and bikes, so it's worth riders getting familiar with the rules before their first journey.
To ride a Beryl e-scooter, you must:
 

  • Be aged 18 or over.
  • Hold a valid full, provisional or supported international driving licence.
  • Submit your licence in the Beryl app before your first ride.

     

Parking and riding rules

 

As part of the initial rollout, e-scooters can only be parked in designated parking bays. Before you set off, check the Beryl app to see where you can end your journey.
The service also includes:

 

  • A maximum assisted speed of 12.5mph.
  • Designated Slow-Go and No-Go zones in certain areas of the city.
  • A riding curfew between 12:00am and 5:00am every day.

 

E-scooters must be ridden on roads and cycle lanes and are not permitted on pavements and the use of helmets is strongly encouraged. 
 

Safety by design

 

Beryl e-scooters have been engineered specifically for UK urban environments, with safety and reliability at the heart of their design. Key features include:

 

  • GPS-enabled geo-fencing to automatically manage speed limits and parking compliance.
  • Go-Slow in busy or shared spaces.
  • Autonomous electromagnetic braking systems designed for hills and wet conditions.
  • Always-on front and rear lights for improved visibility.
  • A large front wheel and suspension fork for greater stability on uneven roads.
  • Tamper-resistant hardware and remote locking capability.

Riders are also supported through in-app education and mandatory training designed to promote safe, responsible riding from their very first trip.
