Laserlight Technology. TRL study.
The beryl Advanced Projection Technology—present in our Laserlight—combines a front LED light with a laser that projects a bike symbol 6 metres onto the road ahead. It gives cyclists a larger footprint on the road, alerts drivers to their approach and lets them be seen in situations where they are otherwise invisible.
The Laserlight is also the first and only bike light tested by a fully independent research organisation. The following illustrations show the result of a study carried out by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) on the effectiveness of the beryl Laserlight.
The study was conducted by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in 2014 as part of the due diligence by Transport for London (TfL) and Serco into the effectiveness of the Laserlight prior incorporating the technology into the London Santander Cycles Bike Hire Scheme.
The test assessed the visibility to a driver of a double-decker London bus of a Bike Hire Scheme bicycle equipped with a beryl Laser, compared with existing front white LED lights presently fitted as standard on the Bike Hire Scheme bicycle. The trial was repeated to measure the visibility to a driver of a van, tipper lorry (truck) and car.
– “The blind-spot areas around the vehicles caused by the limitations of their body shape and mirrors were significantly reduced by the beryl Laserlight”.
– “The beryl Laserlight provided superior visibility over existing LED front cycle lights and over the existing LED-only configuration present on the London hire scheme bicycles”.
– “The percentage of maximum visibility at night to bus drivers improved from 72.4% with just the existing LED lights to 96.2% with the beryl Laserlight. The improvements for other vehicles was 65% to 97% for a van, 78% to 83% for a tipper lorry and 56% to 66% for a car”.
