Riders enjoying Beryl e-bikes by the Cornish coastline

New Year boost for Beryl e-bikes

Shared transport operator Beryl and partners Cornwall Council are offering e-bike riders free 15 minute rides and free unlocks every day of next week.

Available to riders in the Cornish communities of Penzance, Penryn, Truro and Newquay, the offer is designed to encourage even more people to adopt sustainable transport habits.

The offer is limited to one ride per rider per day and will run from Monday 13 January to Sunday 19 January 2025. At the end of the ride, 15 free minutes and the unlock fee will be deducted automatically, but additional time will be still be charged at standard rates.

Beryl Scheme Lead for Cornwall, Kate Palmer, said: “Our e-bikes are a fantastic way to get around and the extra power that they provide can make the county’s occasionally hilly terrain more accessible to some riders and allow them to undertake longer journeys.

“They’re also great for commuting as, by picking up the extra slack, the electric assistance can help you arrive at work looking and feeling as fresh as when you first set off.

“By swapping the car for an e-bike journey you’re not only boosting your own health and fitness, you’re also contributing towards reducing traffic congestion and improving regional air quality.

“So with a week of free rides and unlocks, there has never been a better time to try it out.”

Since first launching in Falmouth in September 2022, the e-bikes have clocked up nearly 275,000 rides covering nearly 700,000km - more than 17 journeys around the Earth.

Feedback from riders tells us that, across Cornwall, almost a quarter of all journeys have replaced private car, van taxi or motorbike journeys. This has, according to industry calculations, saved over 23 tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide emissions in Cornwall.

Users can pay for their journeys in a variety of ways to suit individual needs and  circumstances. Pay As You Ride is best for single journeys or occasional rides and will cost users £1 unlocking fee and 15p per minute. Minute Bundles enable regular users to buy upfront and save money with no unlocking fees, starting at 100 minutes for £15

The Beryl app is available for free download on the App Store for iOS, and the Google Play Store for Android users.
