Beryl's new BBE2 bikes in Stevenage

The next generation of shared e-bike: Beryl launches new lightweight and user-centric shared e-bike

New e-bike sets benchmark for lightweight shared e-bikes, aiming to boost ridership, widen access, and provide a premium riding experience

BBE2 is fully integrated, bringing together all the latest tech developments in the industry and can be used with both docks and virtual bays

UK-based shared transport operator, Beryl, has launched a brand new innovative and lightweight electric bike (e-bike).

The proprietary e-bike is fully integrated, bringing together all of the latest bike-share technological developments, and can be used with both docks and virtual bays.

Beryl's new e-bike (the BBE2) has been meticulously designed with a focus on enhancing the cycling experience, ensuring that every aspect of the bike is tailored to meet the needs of as wide a range of riders as possible. It showcases Beryl’s rich history as both a technology company and the operator of successful bike and e-scooter share schemes. It is the culmination of a well-established feedback loop between riders and Local Authorities (LAs), in-house mechanics, and the Beryl design team.

The bike share market has recently been dominated by a boom and bust model which has seen several major players merge, leave schemes, cause significant issues with blocking pavements, or collapse entirely. In contrast, Beryl has been taking a different approach - building schemes that work for and with local communities and help to increase cycling across England. This has put them in a position to invest in this new e-bike, which sets a new benchmark for the industry.

The new e-bike has been designed from conception with as wide a range of riders in mind as possible. There are key focuses on safety, comfort, and technology, and Beryl is the only operator in the UK to be introducing a new e-bike this year.

Safety

The BBE2 features Beryl’s IoT Controller with Bluetooth, GSM, and GPS. There are internal machined drum brakes for reliable braking on all terrains, and a rear wheel electronic hub lock to prevent theft. As with all Beryl bikes, it’s equipped with the company’s proprietary Laserlight, a powerful front light with laser projection technology and the Burner Brake, a red rear brake with braking detection.

Comfort

This is an e-bike designed to feel more like a bike you’d have at home, ready to use for a variety of functions. There are improved ergonomics with a low-step through frame and an adjustable seat clamp meaning it can be ridden by riders from 4ft11 through to 6ft5. 23-inch wheels with broad rims and puncture-resistant tyres provide better grip and a reliable ride, and there is a large front basket with 10kg of capacity.

Technology

The BBE2 showcases smart bike capabilities and bespoke bike share componentry, all with a focus on providing a premium rider experience. For new riders, the prospect of riding an electric bike for the first time can sometimes be daunting. A 2-speed gear hub provides automatic gear shifting, enabling riders of any ability to always be in the right gear. This is particularly important when moving away from traffic lights on busy roads. There is a swappable 36V battery which provides a significant 80 km range, and a Near Field Communication (NFC) unlocking pad with an integrated phone holder.

Phil Ellis, CEO and Co-Founder of Beryl said:

"We are incredibly proud to have unveiled our new e-bike. It is the culmination of years of our own technological development, and our experience running successful bike and e-scooter schemes across the country.

"There are too many poor quality, heavy and single-geared shared bikes out there and it means cycling is not reaching its potential as a mode of transport. Shared bike schemes are key to unlocking increased levels of cycling, and we have ensured every element of our new model is equipped for a wide range of riders. We can’t wait to see them out on the road, and continuing to expand our work in both England and into Europe.’’
